Cost of living

Cost of living in Southeast Asia: compare the month you would actually live

A useful cost-of-living comparison starts with the same home, the same household and the same daily routine. Relocate Asia compares one adult in a private one-bedroom home, with explicit allowances for food, bills and transport. The figures below are core monthly estimates. Insurance, healthcare and the cash needed to move are additional.

If you are choosing where to work remotely or retire, start here. Then replace the assumptions with the home and habits you actually want.

Monthly living costs across the city directory

The table shows Simple, Comfortable and Living well, each using the rented-motorbike setting. Housing targets a 12-month relocation lease; the spending period is 30 days. A monthly rent reference does not establish that the same home is available for a one-month booking.

On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to see every column.

The table uses the same calculation as the city pages. Its sources combine crowdsourced price observations, published transport references and explicit planning allowances. A total is not a landlord's quote or a record of someone's actual spending. Cities with limited price evidence are marked separately and excluded from budget matching.

What is included in a Simple month?

The comparison assumes a private one-bedroom outside the city centre, 30 casual restaurant meals, eight café coffees and an itemized shopping basket for meals at home. It also includes drinking water, mobile service, home internet, a utility reference and the selected transport arrangement.

The default transport choice is a rented small automatic motorbike, with fuel for an assumed 400 kilometres and separate parking, upkeep and occasional-taxi allowances. It is a starting setting, not a recommendation that you should ride. The directory lets you choose public transport, a mix of public transport and taxis, or mostly taxis instead.

There is also a $40 allowance for household supplies and pantry extras, plus a 10% reserve on the priced basket. These are editorial planning choices. They are not observed city prices, an insurance policy or a promise that every extra is covered.

The budget method explains the quantities and limitations. Open a city to inspect or change the calculation.

The rent figure is where your comparison becomes personal

A reported one-bedroom price is a category. It does not identify the apartment you will be offered.

Ask for written quotes that match your dates, lease length, furnishings and kitchen requirements. Record the address and unit, not just the building name. Two homes in the same building can differ in layout, light, condition and noise.

Then compare what is included. An apartment with internet and building fees included may deserve a different budget from one with the same rent and separate charges. Replace the relevant lines in the worksheet so you do not count an included bill twice.

The site's utility benchmark uses an approximately 85-square-metre apartment. Your home may be smaller, your air-conditioning use may differ, and your lease may use a different tariff. A reference helps you start; the actual meter terms help you decide.

Can you live on $1,200 a month?

A city appearing below a $1,200 filter means its selected core basket fits that cap. It does not establish that your complete life fits it.

Imagine a core estimate of $900 and a personal cap of $1,200. The $300 difference still has to accommodate any higher rent, personal cover, ongoing bills and spending absent from the model. It is not automatically spare money. These numbers are an illustration, not a quote for a city.

Build two totals before deciding:

  • Your recurring month: the adjusted city basket, plus personal costs and commitments elsewhere.
  • Your arrival cash: travel, temporary accommodation, deposits, prepaid rent, setup and a separate contingency.

Prepaid rent affects when you need money. It should not be counted again as an additional living expense for the same month. A refundable deposit ties up cash without being the same as ordinary monthly spending.

Remote workers: price a usable workday

If your income depends on calls or concentrated work, include the space that makes that possible. A nearby café does not settle whether your apartment has a usable desk, enough sockets or a quiet room during your working hours.

Test the main connection and a backup from the actual room. If you need paid coworking, put it into your own budget. The Simple basket does not silently include a membership.

Map the journeys you will repeat. A lower rent can still suit you, but you need to know the cost and time of getting from that address to the places you use.

Retirees: build the budget around your routine

Start with the transport you want to use, the building you can comfortably access and the activities you hope to keep doing. Do not adopt a motorbike budget if you do not intend to ride.

Price your own insurance and healthcare arrangements separately. Neither a low city estimate nor a nearby hospital establishes suitable coverage, access to a particular service or its price.

For a couple, keep shared housing separate from individual meals, transport and personal costs. Doubling a solo total can overstate shared costs; dividing it can hide expenses that remain individual.

Make a shortlist you can investigate

Choose two or three cities that fit the life you want. Use the same lifestyle and transport setting in each, then collect matching housing quotes. Keep a short list of questions the website cannot answer for your particular home.

You can compare Chiang Mai and Da Nang, explore Penang and Chiang Mai for retirement, or plan a trial stay before making a longer commitment.

The free Move-Ready Starter Kit gives you a rental enquiry, viewing checks and a worksheet for monthly spending and arrival cash. Use it to turn a city estimate into questions you can actually send to a landlord.

Sources and scope

The table is calculated from Relocate Asia's maintained city budget data. Each row links to the relevant city; the method page explains source dates, limited samples and editorial allowances. This guide explains the model and does not claim firsthand residence, inspected properties or independently verified market prices.
